The planet is part of a very unique solar system. Eilana itself, an earth-like planet with a diameter of 12108 km, orbits a K5 class orange dwarf star, which has only a third of Sun's luminosity, in a distance of around 65 million kilometers. In about two-and-a-half times that distance a massive asteroid belt exists, consisting of the remains of two or three small planets and numerous objects that entered the system over time.
Also a part of the system is a brown dwarf of about 18 Jupiter masses. Its very elliptic orbit is wide enough to not disturb Eilana, but close enough to the asteroid belt during the perihelions to create considerable turbulence, resulting in meteor showers over Eilana approximately every 430 years. These showers have repeatedly resulted in major impact events with global devastation and collapse of cultures.
